What should I do if the fire alarm goes off?

If the fire alarm goes off, stay calm and follow the fire safety instructions for the area you are in. These are displayed in the building and usually on the back of your room door.

Scape buildings may use a Defend in Place strategy. This means you may only need to evacuate if the alarm sounds in your apartment, your immediate area or if you can see signs of fire. If the alarm sounds in a shared space, leave the building by the nearest safe exit.

If you need to evacuate:

  • Leave immediately using the nearest stairs.
  • Do not use the lifts.
  • Move to the marked assembly point or at least 18 metres away from the building.
  • Do not stand in the lobby or directly outside the entrance.
  • Do not re-enter the building until the fire brigade or Scape team confirms it is safe.

Never try to put out a fire yourself. Fire extinguishers and blankets are there to support a safe escape. If you discover a fire, activate the nearest alarm call point if it is safe, call 999 and tell the Scape team as soon as possible.
