How do I use public transport in the UK?

Public transport is one of the easiest ways to explore your new city, get to university and make the most of student life in the UK.

Getting around London

In London, you can use contactless payment or an Oyster card on the Tube, buses, Overground, Elizabeth line, DLR and most local rail services. Just tap in at the start of your journey and tap out where required. On buses, you only need to tap in.

If you study in London, you may be able to apply for an 18+ Student Oyster photocard, which gives discounted travel on eligible Travelcards and Bus & Tram Passes. Check the latest details at Transport for London.

Travelling outside London

For cities such as Leeds and Guildford, local bus apps are useful for routes, tickets and live updates. For trains between towns and cities, you can book through National Rail or apps such as Trainline.

Helpful apps

  • Citymapper or Google Maps: plan routes and compare travel options.
  • Trainline: book train tickets and check journey times.
  • Local bus apps: buy tickets and track buses in your area.

If you are unsure which stop, station or route is best from your Scape building, ask reception. The team will be happy to point you in the right direction.
