How do I open a UK bank account?
Opening a UK bank account can make everyday student life easier, from paying for food and travel to managing rent and subscriptions. The best option depends on how quickly you need an account and what documents you have ready.
Your options
- Digital banks: app-based banks such as Monzo, Starling and Revolut are often quick to set up. You can usually apply through the app using your passport or identity document.
- High street banks: banks such as Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and NatWest may offer student accounts, but they may ask for proof of identity, proof of address and a letter from your university. You may also need to book an appointment.
Once you are living at Scape, you can use your Scape address for correspondence where a bank accepts this. Check your building address in your booking confirmation or ask reception if you are unsure how to format it.
Before choosing an account, check fees, international transfer charges, cash withdrawal limits and whether the account works well with your phone. If you need a university letter or proof of student status, contact your university’s student services team.
