How do I access healthcare in the UK?
The UK’s healthcare system is called the NHS. If you are an international student on a visa for more than six months, you will usually pay the Immigration Health Surcharge as part of your visa application. This gives you access to NHS care while you study in the UK.
What to do when you arrive
- Register with a GP: a GP is a local doctor for non-urgent health concerns. Register with a surgery near your Scape building as soon as possible, rather than waiting until you feel unwell.
- Use NHS 111 for advice: call 111 if you need medical help but it is not a life-threatening emergency. It is free and available 24/7.
- Go to A&E or call 999 in an emergency: use emergency services if someone is seriously ill, injured or at immediate risk.
You can find guidance on registering with a GP at nhs.uk.
If you feel unwell while living at Scape, you can also speak to the team at reception or message us through the Scape Student app. For basic first aid, our on-site team may be able to help, but ongoing medical concerns should be handled by a GP, NHS service or your university support team.
