Do I need to register with a doctor (GP)?
Yes, it’s a good idea to register with a GP soon after you arrive in the UK. A GP is a local doctor who can help with non-urgent health concerns, prescriptions, referrals and general medical advice.
Why register early?
Registering before you need help means you’ll know where to go if you feel unwell. It can also make it easier to access appointments, repeat prescriptions or support for ongoing health conditions.
How to register
- Find a GP near you: use the NHS GP search at nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-gp.
- Contact the surgery: check whether you can register online or whether you need to call or visit.
- Prepare your details: you may be asked for your passport, proof of address and student details. If you’re unsure what to use as proof of address, ask your Scape reception team.
If you are an international student on a visa for more than six months, you will usually have paid the Immigration Health Surcharge as part of your visa application, giving you access to NHS care during your stay.
