How do I set up essentials when I arrive in the UK?
Once you arrive in the UK, there are a few practical things worth sorting early so everyday life feels easier. You do not need to do everything on day one, but getting these essentials in place will help you settle in quickly.
First things to set up
- UK SIM card: you can usually buy a SIM at airports, supermarkets or mobile phone shops. Pay-as-you-go and rolling monthly plans can be useful while you get settled.
- Bank account: digital banks such as Monzo, Starling and Revolut may be quicker to set up than a traditional bank. Some high street banks may ask for a university letter or proof of address.
- Register with a GP: a GP is a local doctor for non-urgent healthcare. You should register near your Scape building as soon as you can. You can read NHS guidance at nhs.uk.
- Download useful apps: the Scape Student app helps you contact the team, track parcels, book spaces and manage maintenance requests. Citymapper, Trainline and local transport apps can also help you get around.
If you need help finding your way around the area, using the Scape app or understanding what to do next, pop to reception. Our team are here 24/7.
