How can I adjust to life in a new country?

Adjusting to life in a new country takes time, so be patient with yourself. It’s normal to feel excited one day and overwhelmed the next. Small routines, friendly faces and practical support can make a big difference.

Ways to settle in

  • Say yes early on: welcome events, university societies and sports clubs are great places to meet people, especially in the first few weeks.
  • Use Scape’s communal spaces: study areas, kitchens, gyms and events can help you meet other residents without pressure.
  • Create simple routines: find your nearest supermarket, plan your route to university and register with a GP so day-to-day life feels easier.
  • Stay connected: keep in touch with family and friends at home, but also give yourself space to build a life here.
  • Ask for help early: if you’re struggling, speak to your university welfare, wellbeing or counselling team. Their support is usually free and confidential.

The Scape team are here 24/7 too. Pop to reception or message us through the Scape Student app if you need help, feel unsure or just want to know where to start. You’re not expected to figure everything out alone.
